Neglected Dogs Found At Spartanburg Home

October 14, 2003 -- Animal control officers say that they plan to file cruelty charges after more than 20 pit bulls were found Tuesday at a home in northern Spartanburg County.

When investigators arrived at the home on Farley Drive, the dogs were scarred, chained, and living in filth, officers said. The dogs were taken to the Spartanburg Humane Society where they were being fed and cared for on Tuesday night. Officers said that most of the dogs were shackled with heavy logging chains nearly half the weight of the dogs. Firefighters had to cut the chains to free the dogs.

Animal control officers said that they believe the owners bred the pit bulls in his back yard. Investigators say the dogs were kept in broken-down kennels which were strewn with garbage and waste. Two years ago the property owner was cited for ill treatment of animals. Animal control officers said that they plan to file similar charges against him after Tuesday's discovery.
