March 9, 2007, DURHAM, N.C. -- A 3-year-old girl in Durham was hospitalized Tuesday after being attacked by a pit bull in her backyard.

Authorities say even though the dog was chained, the girl got too close to the dog. She suffered injuries to the face and head.

Fortunately, a man working at a home across the street came to her rescue. "Actually, I just ran up and kicked the dog first and then I grabbed the post,” Jaimie Gunter said, “Just do what you got to do."

"I believe he's a hero,” said eyewitness Frank McMillan. “He jumped the fence. He risked his own life. The dog could have got him. He wasn't thinking that. He was just thinking about saving the child."

Now a community organization wants to ban dog chaining in Durham and Orange counties. The Coalition to Unchain Dogs says it is a cruel practice and causes dogs to be more aggressive.
