June 23, PRICHARD, ALABAMA – A strange smell leads to a shocking discovery at a vacant house in Prichard. What some thought was a dead body turned out to be a dead dog, left chained to a cinder block in the backyard of a home in the 300 block of Meaher Street.

Prichard City Councilman Napoleon Bracy, Jr. says after receiving complaints from citizens about the odor, he personally checked into the matter. “I thought maybe it was a dead body too,” said Bracy, commenting on the strong smell. Bracy used his digital camera to snap pictures of the dog, which he says appeared to have been left for dead.

Benny Blanks, the property’s owner, says he recently evicted the tenants but says he had no idea dogs were left on his property. “I went all the way through the house, but I didn’t go to the back,” said Blanks. Some neighbors say they knew about the dogs, but kept quiet. “I didn't say nothing cause I didn't want to get in it,” said LeCedric Washington, who lives on the same street. Washington estimates the dog had been dead for about a month.

Another dog living on the property escaped the deteriorating environment, but was later struck by a passing vehicle. A third dog was rescued by a good samaritan.
