Doggie Duo: Blind Pooch Depends on Mate

May 14, 2005, VINELAND, NEW JERSEY -- Veronica only has eyes for Archie. That's why the Cumberland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is making a special appeal for someone to adopt them as a couple.

Archie, believed to be about 10 years old, is blind. A fight injury in his younger days cost the Pekingese sight in one eye. A medical ailment slowly claimed vision in the other.

But his life is made easier because of the bond he shares with a 4-year-old Lhasa apso called Veronica.

The two were raised in Bridgeton, where they have been under the watchful eye of SPCA cruelty investigators for years. The agency said it tried to work with their former owner to improve their living conditions and physical care.

But investigators confiscated the two dogs Jan. 28 when they were found outside in 10-degree temperatures. Veronica was chained to the back step. Archie couldn't take shelter from the snow -- the doghouse was placed on cinderblocks, putting it out of his reach.

At the time, the SPCA didn't know Archie was blind. Investigators suspected his bad vision was due to his severely matted fur.

But after visits with a vet and groomer, they learned about his ailment.

About the same time, they noticed the special connection between the two dogs.

When staffers toss dog treats into their shared pen, Veronica will nose one over to Archie, said SPCA investigator Kelly Serbeck.

In fact, Veronica also serves as Archie's guide. He trails the jingle of her collar.

"He follows her lead," Serbeck said.

When Archie can't find the doorway, Veronica gives him a gentle push in the right direction.

The SPCA will not separate the two. Without Veronica's help, Archie would be put down.

The SPCA won full custody of the dogs two weeks ago, and now wants to find them the perfect home.

It will cost $132 to adopt both dogs, which is a discounted fee because of the special circumstances.

The dogs' new owner must have patience and be willing to take the time to help Archie adjust to his new surroundings. People with small children should not apply.

Both dogs are up to date on their shots, and Veronica was spayed Friday.
