November 28, 2005, ATHENS, ALABAMA -- An 11-year-old Athens boy was injured and hospitalized Saturday afternoon after he was attacked and bitten on the face by a pit bulldog.

Limestone County Investigator Stanley McNatt said the child was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital and hospitalized following the 12:45 p.m. attack.. McNatt said the child remained in the hospital through the weekend.

The attack occurred at a home on the 21000 block of Piney Chapel Road.

“People were outside looking at the dog which was chained and the child went to pet the animal when the dog attacked him,” said McNatt. “The boy was bitten on the face and required a number of stitches at the emergency room. The child later had to undergo surgery.”

McNatt said the dog was taken to a local veternarian where it is being tested for rabies.

He did not know if the animal would be put to sleep.

The investigation into the attack is continuing, investigators said.
