3-Year-Old Attacked By Pit Bull Released From Hospital

May 9, 2005, CHICAGO -- A 3-year-old girl is out of the hospital but still healing after a vicious attack by a pit bull. Now, one of the dog's handlers has a message she wants the little girl and her family to hear.

CBS 2 News has not been able to reach anyone from three-year-old Akina Jackson's family on Monday. Chicago Animal Care and Control confirms she is the little girl who was attacked by Bruno the pit bull as she went to a West Side home, apparently to buy some candy.

According to a witness in the animal control report, when Jackson got to the house the large dog rushed her, knocked her over, dragged her and bit her on the left ear and cheek.

We talked with a relative of the dog's named owner. The pit bull lived at her place. She wasn't home at the time of the incident, but she says she wishes she could undo what happened.

“I got a phone call saying the dog got loose. The dog was chained up and he broke the chain; got loose. I'm sorry about what happened. We're praying for her family and hope everything goes well, but I'm really sorry for what happened. My heart goes out to the baby,” said Lee Joiner, who is a relative of the dog's owner.

Neighbor Bernadine Amerson said, “I honestly feel from her heart she feels as bad about this as the rest of us do.”

Akina Jackson ended up at Children's Memorial. A spokesperson there says she is no longer in their care.

Jackson is not the first person Bruno bit. Animal Control logged an April incident for a puncture wound to someone's hand. Yesterday's case was so serious, though, Bruno was euthanized.

Police cited the owner for not restraining and not putting a muzzle on the animal. Fines can range from $1,000 to $10,000 plus restitution for the victim.

May 9, 2005 — A 3-year-old girl remains hospitalized after being attacked by a pit bull on the city's Northwest Side.

Chicago's Animal Control Department euthanized the dog that attacked Akina Jackson. The young girl and her aunt had gone to a home on the 1600-block of North Moody to buy candy from the neighbor, who operated a candy store out of the home. While in the home, the pit bull attacked the child.

"The owner of the dog said he broke the chain, he got out of a chain. You can't have a vicious dog in a chain that he can break. That's crazy," said Lillian Myvett, victim's grandmother.

Neighbors say just a few days ago the dog attacked another neighborhood child.

Police issued citations against the dog's owner.
