June 1, 2005, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI -- Animal Control officers seized a dog Wednesday after a boy was bitten in the 5800 block of North Jarboe.
"We just heard some screams and we went running down the street and I found this boy bleeding like crazy," neighbor Alex Gonzalves said. "I put some compresses on his head because there was a pretty big gash. What really scared me was that he had trouble breathing. That was very, very bad."
Neighbors called 911. They told KMBC that they don't remember any problems with the animal. Police found the dog chained up near a dog house in its owner's back yard.
"You know, he's usually pretty docile, but I guess he got tired of people cutting through my yard or something," owner Linda Stewart said.
Stewart said she took in the dog named Bear when he was a stray.
"He's the sweetest dog. He just didn't like that kid, I guess," Stewart said.
Stewart gave the dog over to Animal Control officers, who will keep Bear in quarantine for 10 days to make sure he's not sick. Authorities said that because Stewart did not break any laws, she will get the dog back.
The boy who was bitten and his family are in the process of moving from Kansas City to Warrensburg. They don't expect to be in the neighborhood for long.
