February 17, 2005. JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The family of a four-year old is by her side while she recovers from emergency surgery. Animal Control says the family pit bull attacked Kaylin Flowers while her mother was standing just feet away.

Family members say the pit bull was chained in the back yard to a dog runner. He had just been fed, when the child's mother went outside to give him more food. The little girl followed behind. In a split second, the mother told police the pit bull latched onto Kaylin's neck and dragged her around the yard.

Family members tell First Coast News it is out of the dogs character to be aggressive.

The dog will be put to sleep at the request of the family.

Doctors told the family Kaylin may have permanent nerve damage. She may need a second surgery.
