February 17, 2005, HAWKESBURY, AUSTRALIA -- A 32-YEAR-old North Richmond man appeared in Penrith Local Court on Monday for allegedly killing a dog and attacking its owner with an axe.

He was charged with attempted murder, committing an act of aggravated cruelty on an animal, and malicious damage.

Hawkesbury crime manager Detective Inspector Brett McFadden said the 32-year-old, who worked and lived at Peels Dairy on Terrace Road at North Richmond, was arrested on Friday morning, charged with offences relating to a home-made .22 calibre pistol. The weapon was seized and the man released on bail.

Det. Insp. McFadden said the man returned to the dairy at 2pm and retrieved an axe and carving knife from his caravan, and went to a worker's hut where another man was sleeping.

When the 44-year-old workmate opened the door, he was allegedly struck on the head with the axe. During a struggle inside the hut, he eventually pushed his attacker outside.

Det. Insp. McFadden said the 32-year-old then struck at the door and windows of the hut with the axe. He allegedly attacked the man's dog, which was chained up outside, and caused extensive damage to the other man's vehicle.

Police were called and arrested the man.

The workmate was treated for wounds to his head and stomach. His dog, a kelpie, was so severely injured it had to be put down.

Det. Insp. McFadden said the dog squad was called in to help locate the axe and knife in heavy bushland.

The man did not enter a plea in Penrith Court and was refused bail. The case was adjourned to March 18 at Penrith.
