November 17, 2004,EDMONTON,CANADA-- A man mauled by his rottweiler told authorities minutes after the attack he wanted the animal destroyed, but officials say they will wait before taking any action. "He made a quick statement that he would have the dog put down," city animal control services coordinator Art Becker said yesterday.

"We're not going to take any stock in that right now," said Becker, pointing out the owner had just been sedated by paramedics after the emotionally charged incident. Becker said the owner will be contacted in a few days to see if he still wants to destroy the dog.

Craig Planidin, 40, was attacked by his dog Kane around 4 p.m. on Monday near 121 Avenue and 79 Street. Police said it took six Taser hits to subdue the dog. Kane is now in quarantine for 10 days at the city pound to monitor the pooch for any health concerns, such as rabies.

A neighbour told the Sun she wasn't surprised the dog attacked the owner. "He created that monster," said Mary, who asked her last name not be used. "It's not that dog's fault." Mary said the dog spent much of its time chained and penned up. "It attacked him because it never socialized," she said.
