November 2, 2004, SALEM, OREGON – Six of the seven dogs found chained to a pole with their muzzles wrapped in duct tape last month in Salem are now up for adoption.
The Humane Society of the Willamette Valley has cared for the dogs since they were rescued on Oct. 27 and police are still trying to figure out who was behind the animal abuse.
A humane society worker shows where one of the dogs was wrapped with duct tape.
"These six dogs are recovering from the horrible encounter and we are excited to find them new homes," said HSWW kennel manager Jimmy White. "Understandably, all of the dogs are still timid, but it is obvious they have a lot of love to give."
Shelter workers affectionately named the dogs after players on the Boston Red Sox team. The dogs now available for adoption include Bronson, a 10-month-old female; Reese, a four-year-old female; Marty, a one-year-old male; Manny, a one-year-old male; Orlando, a two-year-old male; and Johnny, a two-year-old male. All of the dogs appear to be Shepherd-Chow-Pit mixes.
"We have a commitment to place behaviorally sound animals into the community," said Susan Carey, HSWV executive director. "We truly hope that the right families will come forward to give these animals the love they deserve. With a bit of socialization, they will make wonderful pets."
The dogs had to be evaluated for adoption after a required period of time went by, to give the owner a chance to come forward. But the owner never contacted the shelter.
The seventh dog did not pass the standard temperament test, so it will remain at the shelter for now.
Anyone with information that may help in the investigation is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 503-588-6123 or 503-588-8477.
People interested in adopting the dogs can contact the HSWV at (503) 585-5900, ext. 327 or stop by between noon and 7 p.m., Monday though Friday or between noon and 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Adoptions stop one hour before close of business.
