July 30, 2004 TUCSON--Don't leave Fido chained to a tree. It's illegal, and it can kill your dog.
Eight tied dogs have died in recent weeks, including three puppies whose mother gave birth July 15 while
chained out in 100-degree-plus heat, according to the Animal Cruelty Task Force of Southern Arizona.
"Many people do not understand just how our lethal our desert can be," Detective Mike Duffey of the Pima
County Sheriff's Department said in a news release. "They see stories on television or in the newspaper
about people dying all the time in our heat, but then don't take a second thought about the dog tied to
the fence in their own back yard."
After a Pima Animal Care worker intervened, the dog continued laboring and delivered three more puppies.
One was stillborn and was revived by Animal Control Officer Deline Attebery, the task force said.
Felony animal cruelty charges are pending against the dog's owner. The mother dog and her pups have been
adopted.
If you see a dog illegally tied, call the Pima Animal Care Center at 743-7550.
