May 19, 2004, COCHRANE, CANADA--Two dog attacks occurring on two different
Indian reserves left Cochrane officials busy last week. A dog attack on the
Morley reserve in the mid-afternoon on April 30 has left a four-year-old
girl recovering at the Children’s Hospital with cuts to her face and ear.
Staff Sgt. Mike McTaggart said there was nothing on file to indicate how the
child came in contact with the chained mutt, which belonged to her
grandfather.
“Her father was supposed to take the dog to the SPCA or Humane Society for
observation,” said McTaggart, adding it was at the request of the Children’s
Hospital to check for rabies. He was unsure if that had yet been done.
No charges were laid in connection to this incident.
Another dog attack on the Tsuu T’ina reserve, close to Redwood Meadows had
Cochrane EMS busy the night of May 2.
A 12-year-old boy was riding his bicycle along Poplar Bluff Rd. when he was
attacked by four dogs. “He ended up with multiple lacerations to his left
leg, right leg and arms as well,” said Brilz.
The boy indicated when he was pulled off his bike by the dogs he tried to
fight back using his belt, which only made the dogs more aggressive and
vicious.
“It appears he was driven home by the owner of the dogs at this time,” said
Brilz.
