Mother Faces Abuse Charge in Son's Death
The Sanford Herald, North Carolina
February 28, 2004 --A Bunnlevel woman whose son was killed by a neighbor's
pit bull in January has been charged with child abuse, according to the
Harnett County Sheriff's Office.
Christina Jewel Gambill, 24, of 89 Doris Drive, Bunnlevel, was served
Tuesday with a criminal summons for non-assaultive child abuse, a
misdemeanor. Jewel's 3-year-old son, Nathan Hill, died in mid-January after
wandering into the yard of a neighbor. He was mauled by a pit bull that was
chained to a post in the backyard. A sheriff's deputy had to kill the dog in
order to reach the child.
No charges were filed against the owner of the dog.
At the time, Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins said he didn't believe any
charges would be brought in connection with Hill's death, but that the final
decision would be up to District Attorney Tom Lock.
Lock was not available for comment Wednesday.
