East Texas Boy Mauled at Bus Stop

October 28, 2003

A four-year-old boy is in stable condition in a Dallas hospital after he was mauled by a pit bull while waiting for a school bus in East Texas.

Investigators say Jonathan Shane Ivey suffered lacerations to his scalp, injuries to his left leg and his left ear.

Henderson County sheriff's Lieutenant Pat McWilliams says the boy was waiting with two older siblings for a Mabank (MAY'-bank) school bus near Seven Points.

He tells the Tyler Morning Telegraph that the dog was chained but still able to reach the road where the kids were standing. A man alleged to be the dog's owner was attacked when he tried to rescue the boy.

McWilliams says the dog didn't release Jonathan until the man shot and killed it.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation continues. Seven Points is 47 miles southeast of Dallas.
